Lore[edit]
“I don't take myself too seriously. I don't take myself anywhere. I need to get out more.”Mirage is the kind of guy who likes to stand out. The youngest of four brothers, he perfected the art of fooling around to get attention. The one thing he took seriously was Holo-Pilot technology: introduced to the illusion-creating tech by his engineer mother, he poured over the mechanisms and learned all he could about them. Even when his brothers went MIA during the Frontier War, Mirage and his mother continued to develop holo devices, and the work brought them closer.
While working as a bartender to make ends meet, Mirage heard amazing stories from his patrons about the Apex Games and the wealth and glory that came with victory.
As good as both of those sounded, he knew he couldn’t risk leaving his mother childless – until she gave him a set of customized holo devices and told him to follow his dream. Mirage is now the life of the Apex Games, outwitting opponents and charming audiences across the Outlands.

Aside from the fact that you'll likely have to spend some money to play as him, Mirage is definitely one of the more fun and experimental characters in Apex Legends. He can send out multiple clones of himself at once with his Ultimate ability, and in this Apex Legends Mirage guide, we'll be walking you through everything you need to know about the character.
However if you need any additional information on Respawn's hit battle royale game, you can always head over to our full Apex Legends tips page. It's here that you can find a complete index of our individual guide pages on the game, as well as a list of essential tips for all aspiring Apex players.
Apex Legends Mirage Backstory
Mirage, like Gibraltar, hails from the planet Solace in Apex Legends. After his three brothers met their demise in the Frontier War, Mirage, also known as Elliott Witt, wanted to enter the Apex Games, but knew he couldn't leave his mother childless.
Over time, both Witt and his mother have harnessed the power of holographic technology. Making Mirage the capable fighter he is today, he goes forth into the Apex Games seeking fame and fortune.
Apex Legends Mirage Unlock
There are two ways to unlock Mirage in Apex Legends. One is through earning enough in-game currency, 12,000 to be exact, so you can unlock the character without paying a cent.
Alternatively, if you're not looking to grind out Apex Legends for the in-game currency, you can pay up 750 Apex Coins to unlock Mirage straight away. You're going to be looking at spending $10 to pay for 1,000 Apex Legends, giving you enough to unlock Mirage.
Apex Legend Mirage Abilities
Mirage, just like the other characters of Apex Legends, has three unique abilities. There's his passive, tactical, and ultimate abilities, the latter two of which have cooldown timers.
- Encore (Passive) - When knocked down, Mirage automatically cloaks, and deploys a decoy that lasts for 5 seconds.
- Psyche Out (Tactical) - Send a holographic decoy to a designated point within eyesight, to confuse and draw enemy fire.
- Vanishing Act (Ultimate) - Deploys an entire team of decoys of Mirage that run in different directions, while the true Mirage cloaks.
Apex Legends Mirage Ultimate
Mirage's Ultimate ability is called Vanishing Act, and for good reason. When used, Mirage sends out a group of decoys, which automatically run away from your location in all directions, while you, the true Mirage, turn invisible for a few brief seconds.
There's definitely been those in the Apex community that dislike Mirage's Ultimate ability, and while it does only temporarily distract your enemies, I actually quite like it. But the trick is knowing when to use the Ultimate.
If you use it out in the open when enemies can see you, chances are they're going to spot your faint outline while cloaked, and follow you. But if you can use it in cover, when you're pinned down, or when a character that has an area of effect ability like Gibraltar's smoke launcher lets loose, you're in a perfect position to distract your enemy with some decoys, while positioning yourself to get the drop on them.
Apex Legend Mirage Tips
Mirage actually strikes quite a nice balance of passive and aggressive play in Apex Legends. Admittedly, we've found his Encore ability a bit useless in the past since it just delays the inevitable of eventually getting killed while you're downed.
His Psyche Out ability on the other hand, is really useful. It's actually not immediately obvious to opposing players that what they're seeing is a decoy of Mirage, so using the decoy when you're in the middle of a firefight to draw enemy attention is a really useful tool to have in your back pocket.
Outside of this, Mirage's Vanishing Act ultimate ability can be a bit hit and miss. When used at the right time, for example when you're in the middle of Gibraltar's smoke bomb, or Caustic's Nox Gas Traps, it can be really useful for drawing enemy fire while you and your time retreat and regroup.
Apex Legends Mirage Legendary Skins
Below, you can see all four legendary skins available for Mirage in Apex Legends. To unlock any of these skins, you'll need to pay up 1,200 crafting materials.
Mirage Voice Actor
The voice of Mirage in Apex Legends is none other than Roger Craig Smith, who's been in more video games than you can count. Some of his headlines roles include Batman: Arkham Origins, Assassin's Creed, Kingdom Hearts 3, Sonic, and many more.

Apex Legends Mirage ultimate and abilities explained
Every Legend in Apex Legends has three abilities; a passive, tactical, and ultimate. Mirage's passive, named 'Encore!', is easily the weakest of his three abilities, rarely finding itself useful, since all it does is send out a decoy when you go down and turn Mirage invisible for a short while. Unless you're in the middle of a chaotic firefight and there's multiple players all around you, enemies will usually just wait for you to become visible again before finishing you off.
When it comes to Mirage's tactical, 'Psyche Out', you have some serious power at your fingertips if you use it correctly. This sends out a holographic decoy in the direction you're aiming, who will only stop if there's an obstacle in his path. When used in the middle of a fight, this decoy can provide the perfect opportunity to shoot at enemies as they're confused by the imaginary man. If they don't see you send him on his way, it will almost always do the trick for a few seconds.
'Vanishing Act', the Mirage ultimate, is very hit and miss. The first few times you use it you'll probably be underwhelmed; a bunch of decoys run out and you become invisible, but then they simply stand still a few feet in front of you. As ultimates go, it's not great, but there's a trick to it. If you deploy the Mirage ultimate while on a ledge - as long as some of the decoys drop down - they will continue running just like the 'Psyche Out' decoy.
How to play Mirage in Apex Legends - Tips & tricks
With all that said, here are a few key tips on how to use Mirage in Apex Legends and make the most out of his abilities.
- Crawl for your life when Encore! activates - If you get knocked down, remember to just crawl away as quickly as your knees will carry you. You're invisible for just a few seconds so if you can find a corner to hide in while your teammates frag out, you'll have a chance of survival.
- Use Psyche Out frequently, even when not in combat - Tactical abilities in Apex Legends regenerate quickly - Psyche Out takes just 12 seconds - so if you're running from one location to the next, try sending out a decoy before you go round any corners. If there's enemies waiting nearby, they'll almost certainly shoot at your decoy and give away their position. Then of course, use it as much as possible in battle because it should buy you a few extra seconds.
- Remember to use Vanishing Act when elevated - We mention it above but we cannot stress how much better Vanishing Act is when you can make the decoys continue running. Of course, if you're in a pinch then use it as needed but if you have the luxury of waiting, try and jump up somewhere high before activating it.
How does the Mirage hitbox compare to other Legends?
One other aspect you have to take into consideration when using Mirage in Apex Legends is the size of his hitbox. We go into much more detail in our Apex Legends hitboxes guide, but for Mirage specifically, he's in the middle of the park. Mirage is exactly the same size as Bangalore, which is bigger than Wraith, Lifeline, and Bloodhound, but smaller than Pathfinder, Caustic, and Gibraltar. If you want to play a super small character than Mirage isn't the one, but he's not oversized either.
Mirage voice actor - Roger Craig Smith
As an addendum, if you recognise Mirage's voice from somewhere, we may be able to shed some light as to why. Roger Craig Smith is the man behind the decoy-fuelled deviant, and he's previously voiced Ezio Auditore da Firenze in Assassin's Creed, Chris Redfield in Resident Evil, and most importantly, he's the current voice of Sonic the Hedgehog. Gotta go fast!
Mirage is one of our favourite Legends in the game due to his ability to trick other players, so go out there and start bamboozling! Final fantasy xii download.
